The Western Lake Erie Basin Initiative (WLEBI) is a regional program of Ridge Strategy Partners focused on strengthening the systems that support healthier watersheds, resilient landscapes, and effective environmental stewardship across the Western Lake Erie Basin.

Our approach brings together environmental knowledge, project and program management, systems thinking, adaptive management, and practical implementation to help organizations better understand, coordinate, and manage environmental work over time.

Environmental challenges rarely exist in isolation. Stormwater infrastructure, conservation landscapes, restoration areas, habitat, streams, wetlands, floodplains, maintenance practices, contractors, budgets, regulations, and community priorities are interconnected.

WLEBI approaches these challenges as systems.

Rather than focusing only on individual projects or maintenance events, we help organizations understand how environmental assets, projects, people, resources, and responsibilities fit together—and where better coordination can improve both environmental outcomes and operational efficiency.

Organizations may be responsible for multiple environmental assets or initiatives across a property, campus, community, or service area.

A commercial property may have several stormwater management practices. A college campus may manage rain gardens, conservation landscapes, detention facilities, native plantings, and restoration areas. A municipality may be coordinating multiple stormwater, habitat, infrastructure, and watershed projects at different stages of development.

Managing those responsibilities requires more than completing individual maintenance tasks.

This may include helping organizations better coordinate the management of stormwater practices, native and conservation landscapes, restoration areas, and other green infrastructure while considering maintenance realities, environmental objectives, available resources, and long-term performance.

Our role is not to replace engineers, landscape architects, contractors, regulatory professionals, or other specialized experts when their services are required. Instead, we help organizations understand the larger system, organize the work, coordinate the appropriate resources, and keep environmental objectives connected to practical implementation.

Long-term environmental performance depends on the people responsible for maintaining and managing these systems.

WLEBI supports training and knowledge-sharing for maintenance personnel, property managers, institutions, municipalities, organizations, and other stakeholders responsible for landscapes and environmental assets.

The objective is not simply to explain what a practice is designed to do, but to help the people responsible for it understand why it matters, what to observe, when something may require attention, and how their work contributes to the larger watershed system.

The Western Lake Erie Basin already contains significant expertise, organizations, programs, research, and community effort.

WLEBI is not intended to replace that work.

Our role is to connect, coordinate, and strengthen it—helping identify opportunities where organizations, professionals, institutions, contractors, researchers, landowners, and communities can work more effectively across traditional boundaries.

Where specialized expertise is needed, good strategy means recognizing that need and bringing the right people to the table.

Environmental systems change. Projects evolve. Maintenance needs shift. Budgets change. New information becomes available.

Our approach is therefore intentionally adaptive:

We establish enough structure to move forward while maintaining the flexibility to learn from field conditions, performance, experience, and new information.

WLEBI begins with practical, manageable opportunities where better coordination, environmental knowledge, and structured management can make a measurable difference.

Over time, lessons from individual properties, projects, organizations, and communities can inform broader approaches to environmental asset management, watershed stewardship, conservation landscaping, and restoration throughout the Western Lake Erie Basin.
